Save/import of contacts gone in latest QFE3 update of Windows Live Messenger 2009.

A commenter over at Jonathan Key’s Messenger Geek blog has pointed out a very useful feature has been removed in the latest QFE patch. The ability to backup and restore the Messenger Contacts list. Why this has to be removed I have no idea nor does Jonathan Kay.

The feature was handy for the following scenarios.

  1. Moving your contact list from one account to another. Like I had to do a few years ago.
  2. When you want to have a backup of all your contacts for use elsewhere.
  3. Restoring your contact list after it has somehow disappeared.

One suggestion that Jonathan has suggested is to go to http://people.live.com/ , choose the Manage menu and then Export or Import but this is not ideal.
