British hacker fights extradition

A Scot has launched a High Court fight against extradition to the US for allegedly carrying out the "biggest military computer hack of all time".
Glasgow-born Gary McKinnon, 41, is accused of gaining access to 97 US military and Nasa computers.

Home Secretary John Reid granted the US request to extradite him for trial.

At the High Court in London, his lawyers argued he had been subjected to "improper threats" and the move would breach his human rights.

Edmund Lawson QC, told two judges that, if extradited, Mr McKinnon would face the prospect of an unknown length of time in pre-trial detention, with no likelihood of bail.

Farnborough Sixth Form College achieved the best results out of all colleges in the south of England, according to the league tables published yesterday (11 January 2006) by the government.  According to the tables, the average A level points score per student of 1002.3 makes it the top college in Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and the whole of southern Britain, and second in the entire country.

The examination room of the future – today! An assessment first for Farnborough Sixth Form College

On Wednesday 13 December at Farnborough Sixth Form College eighty students took their IT Key Skills – Level 2 exams. Nothing unusual about that, you may say, but all the students were in the same room and sitting next to each other completing the assessment on-line. What made this different was the use of privacy filters to prevent learners seeing each other’s work.

Privacy filters have been developed by 3M for use in the business and commercial setting, to prevent sensitive on-screen information from being viewed by others, typically when executives are working whilst travelling in planes or trains. Neighbours in adjacent seats are unable to read a laptop screen with a privacy filter in place.

Windows Vista is Golden

As promised yesterday and after 5 years of development, Vista is finally finished.

Jim Allchin, the co-president of Microsoft’s Platforms & Services Division has put together a video about the announcement where he announces the General Availability (GA) date of 30 January 2007 for Vista.

Nick White, product manger in Windows client also had this to share with Neowin readers:

“Ultimately, we never could have achieved this milestone without you, the enthusiast community, who have played a key role in making this the highest-quality, most secure, most reliable and most usable version of Windows the world has ever seen. You gave us unprecedented support in testing and providing your feedback while we designed, developed and refined Windows Vista — so much so that it has in many ways become a reflection of your involvement.”

On a conference call with Jim Allchin, Microsoft announced that they will have 18 languages at launch in January and will ship 32 within 100 days of English RTM.

Availability of the RTM code on MSDN is still not known officially with a Microsoft spokesperson citing “within 7 days” after todays announcement. Given MSDN has scheduled down time from 7PM PST to 9PM PST on Friday, November 10th – I’d expect it to arrive shortly after that.

I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Microsoft, its partners and OEMs and wish Jim Allchin all the best with his retirement from Microsoft at the end of January – good work guys.
